In a recent episode of YouTube channel Great Big Story’s “Hey Willie,” Nelson divulges that as a young kid growing up in a small Texas town he became subject to bullying because of his intense nose picking. He dug ’til there was blood.
But he overcame the bullies thanks to his grandmother and a poem she’d read to him when he was six years old. It went like this:
What’re you looking at me for? I ain’t got nothing to say. If you don’t like the looks of me, you can just look the other way.
“I thought it was so funny, I started living that way,” he said. Since then, Nelson has been living life by the golden rule: treat others like you want to be treated.
Another video of the same interview features Nelson talking about his love of marijuana and his new brand of weed called Willie’s Reserve. He thinks it’s hilarious how famous he is for his relationship with pot.
